Pain and recurring cramps are unpleasant. They’re also common in children with autism spectrum disorder—making everyday tasks much more difficult than they ought to be.

What Causes Limb Pain in Children with Autism?

One potential explanation is magnesium deficiency. This mineral plays a key role in helping the muscles relax across the heart and skeleton.

When the body lacks the right amount of magnesium, the muscles can contract too much—leading to pain in one or more limbs. The potential problems, however, don’t end there, as magnesium deficiency can cause even worse issues.

Dreams Can Come True - See How We Changed Matteo’s Life

Within five months of therapy, Matteo showed remarkable progress in communication, verbal expression, and comprehension, to the point where he no longer met the diagnostic criteria for autism.

What Are Some Additional Problems Caused by Magnesium Deficiency?

Magnesium is responsible for several physiological functions. As a result, prolonged deficiency can contribute to the following conditions:

· Constipation

Healthy gastrointestinal tract motility relies on magnesium, and magnesium ions help to control peristalsis, or the involuntary constriction and relaxation of the intestines.
A magnesium deficiency can disrupt the gastrointestinal tract’s usual function and cause peristaltic movement issues, leaving it unable to facilitate proper digestion. As a result, persistent constipation may occur.

· Convulsions

During convulsions, uncontrollable shaking may occur as the muscles tighten and relax in quick succession, causing the person to lose control over their body. It may seem as though the body is shaking in this situation This shaking can worsen in the absence of adequate magnesium, which helps regulate normal muscle function.

· Sleep disorders

Magnesium supports the synthesis of N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine (melatonin), a molecule derived from serotonin and associated with healthy sleep patterns that helps regulate biological processes such as the sleep–wake cycle.

· Chronic Fatigue

Children with a magnesium deficiency may experience fatigue, as magnesium forms the Mg-ATP complex and is required by many ATP-dependent enzymes — the body’s main energy processes.
Because ATP utilization depends on adequate magnesium, a deficiency can impair energy production and use, leading to persistent (or chronic) fatigue.

· Nervousness

Magnesium is needed to produce serotonin, which is essential for regulating mood and promoting relaxation. A lack of magnesium can lead to nervousness, making it harder for a child on the autistic spectrum to calm down.

· Hyperactivity

The body needs magnesium for cellular processes involved in the synthesis of dopamine and epinephrine, both of which are crucial to one’s ability to focus and concentrate. Too little magnesium can contribute to hyperactivity.

Dreams Can Come True

See how C.A.T.’s targeted nutritional supplements therapy changed three-year-old Lior’s Life.

In May 2020, we embarked on a fascinating documentary journey. For five months, we filmed Lior and his parents. The film documents his targeted therapy and teaches how it is possible to dramatically reduce autism symptoms by analyzing advanced laboratory tests and applying an in-depth understanding of how to repair impaired metabolic processes that influence behaviors.

Why Are Children with Autism More Susceptible to Magnesium Deficiency?

Chronic fatigue with children with autism

Children on the autism spectrum are often very selective in their dietary preferences. They may choose not to eat green vegetables, whole grains, nuts, bananas, or magnesium sources.

Additionally, conditions such as diarrhea, inflammatory bowel disease, celiac disease, and other absorption disruptions can be blamed. These conditions can prevent children from getting the nutrition they need from food in the long term.

In some cases, overproduction of the Candida Albicans fungus can even lead to infection, further disrupting magnesium absorption.

Children on the autism spectrum may feel stressed and under more pressure than others, which can place greater magnesium demands on the body. This may lead to a deficiency if left unaddressed.

How Can You Identify a Magnesium Deficiency?

Laboratory tests can detect magnesium deficiency in children.

When a deficiency is detected, the child may be required to take magnesium each night before bed, as it can help to relax the muscles. Dosages, however, should be managed carefully, as magnesium toxicity can lead to fatigue, respiratory issues, and other problematic conditions.

Magnesium supplementation must only be carried out under the guidance of a qualified physician and based on accurate laboratory test results. Incorrect use or unsupervised intake may lead to health risks, including toxicity, fatigue, and respiratory complications.
